Do you know "OUR BREWING," just a 2-minute walk from Fukui Station? It was started by two Heisei-born people from Fukui.
Mugi
Whoa, Heisei-born! They're young. How did they get started?
Hop Bro
Representative Tomohiro Okada was shocked by craft beer culture while studying in Ohio in the U.S., then trained in Japan and abroad before returning home and launching the brewery in Fukui in 2022. The other founder, Mr. Nakanishi, is also from Fukui, and their shared motto is "Connect people with beer."
Mugi
Wow, that's local pride. What kind of beer do they make?
Hop Bro
The flagship is a Cold IPA called "Hoppy Hour." It uses Nelson Sauvin hops from New Zealand, which have a white-wine-like aroma, plus Fukui's branded rice "Ichihomare" and malted barley from Fukui as adjunct ingredients.
Mugi
Rice!? Ichihomare in beer? They're really using Fukui ingredients heavily!
Hop Bro
What's more, Hoppy Hour won a gold medal at the 2024 International Beer Cup. It was selected from 1,423 entries in the world's third-oldest judging competition, so this was an amazing achievement just half a year after opening.
Mugi
What!? A world gold medal in just half a year!?
Hop Bro
Brewer Yamaguchi is deeply committed to lager brewing and also makes a German pilsner called "Täglich Pils." It won gold at the Asia Beer Championship 2025 and silver at the Japan Great Beer Awards. They also make a 7% West Coast IPA called "Dino King" that really hits hard.
Mugi
They're strong at both lagers and IPAs, so the range is impressive! What does the place feel like?
Hop Bro
It's on the first floor of a mixed-use complex called FUKUMACHI BLOCK, where you can see 1,000L brewing equipment and seven fermentation tanks through the glass. The entrance has a three-layer noren inspired by beer foam, and the ceiling is decorated with Echizen washi paper. They release a new beer every week, so you'll find something different every time you visit.
Mugi
A new release every week!? They also had a 2nd-anniversary IPA called "Second," right? And the yuzu-infused pilsner "Runner's High" sounds interesting too... I want to go!
