On April 19, Awa Brewing introduced its new collaboration beer "Hona, Sorede!" - West Coast Pilsner on Instagram. This beer was brewed to commemorate the second anniversary of Exizo no Frank (@ekizonofrank), a kakuguchi coffee stand in Kobe Sannomiya, and marks the third collaboration with the Frank family of specialty coffee shops centered in Kobe Motomachi.

Characteristics of "Hona, Sorede!"

In the post, the brewery explained that the beer was designed as a "West Coast Pilsner you can drink gulp after gulp." The result is a sharp, clean-drinking beer in which the crispness derived from the malt is layered with a refreshing, muscat-like fruitiness from the hops. The hop character was kept from becoming overly assertive, with an emphasis on balance that makes it easy to keep drinking.

Brewing Notes

According to the brewer's comments, the recipe was kept deliberately simple, using only base malt. The hops were added in four stages - during the boil, in the kettle, as dip hops, and as dry hops - to bring out fruitiness without letting it become too forward. The hops used were Centennial, Super Sauvin, and Motueka, and the yeast was Nova Lager. The specs are ABV 5.0%, IBU 40.7, and SRM 2.9.

About Awa Brewing

Awa Brewing is a brewery in Fukui City that operates both its brewhouse and taproom inside MINIE, a commercial facility in front of JR Fukui Station. Equipped with 1,000L brewing equipment, it has a system in place for brewing new releases every week, and collaboration beers like this one are among the works that support its ability to communicate its identity. This release, which connects Fukui's local Rokujyo barley malt with the store culture of Kobe, is also interesting as an attempt to link two venues with different regional identities.

The phrase "Hona, Sorede!" also carries the intention of evoking the exchange between shop and customer through ordering. Created to coincide with an anniversary at a venue where coffee and alcohol intersect, this is a beer to enjoy fully, including the story behind the collaboration.
