What kind of brewery is Yellow Monkey Brewing?
Hop BroYellow Monkey Brewing, or YMB for short. The founder, Hiroki Komada, has an unbelievably unusual background.
MugiWait, he isn't from the beer industry?
Hop BroNot at all. You know the Swiss sports brand On, right? The running shoe company. Komada launched On's Japanese subsidiary in 2013 and served as its president for 10 years. He was a real pro who grew the brand from an annual budget of 4 million yen.
MugiWhat! The former head of On Japan is making beer? Why beer?
Hop BroWhen he organized a running event that toured eight cities nationwide in 2019, he realized, 'My purpose in life is to connect people and spread smiles.' After seeing On become self-sustaining in Japan without him, he stepped down in February 2024 and started the brewery.
MugiWow... Sports and beer seem like total opposites at first, but they're connected by the same core idea: bringing people together.
Hop BroWhat's more, the taproom has a shower room attached, so you can jog along Yokohama's Tsuzuki Greenway, take a shower, and then toast with a beer right away. It really brings the RUN & BEER concept to life. They also hold actual run events called 'RUN & BEER' in collaboration with Yokohama Beer.
MugiI've never heard of a brewery with a shower! What kinds of beers do they have?
Hop BroThey have labels like 'GOHOBI IPA' and 'Hashiru Ale,' whose names capture the feeling of a reward after running. More recently, their collaboration beer with tvk's program 'Neko no Hitai Hodo Wide,' called 'Nekohita Ale,' also got attention. It's made with 'Nekohikari,' rice grown in Oiso Town.

Hop BroThey also take on innovative beers fermented with sake yeast and wine yeast. Head brewer Kengo says, 'My goal isn't the beer itself, but the smiles of the people who drink it,' and he's completely in sync with Komada.
