Faló Brewing is a brewery I've been paying a lot of attention to lately. It's in Yamamoto Town, Miyagi, and they've renovated an old school into a brewery. It used to be Sakamoto Junior High School.

An old school turned into a brewery!? That's way too cool!

The representative, Nari Handa, also has an incredible background. After working at a food and liquor import company, he gained brewing experience at Ushitora Brewery in Tochigi and CRAFTROCK BREWING in Tokyo, and later served as head brewer at Sailor's Grave Brewing in Australia.

Head brewer in Australia! Someone who trained overseas making beer in a former school in Tohoku is such a contrast.

While he was in Australia, he also won gold at an international competition. With that skill, he completed the brewery in Yamamoto Town in 2025. "Faló" means "campfire" in Italian. It carries the idea of creating a place where people can gather and talk together.

A campfire, huh? That's such a warm concept. What kinds of beer are they making?
Hop Bro
Their flagship beer, "FALÓ IPA," is a West Coast style that really highlights hop aroma and bitterness. "Tsubame Draught" is a lager that pairs well with food, named after the swallow, Yamamoto Town's town bird. And the interesting one is "HBD," a strawberry ale.

Strawberries!?
Hop Bro
Yamamoto Town is famous as a "strawberry town," so they use strawberries from local Sansan-en to create a beer with a bright, shortcake-inspired aroma. It's also made for people who don't usually like beer, and it even comes in cans for 680 yen.

A strawberry beer sounds amazing! They also released an IPA called "OBAKE," right?
Hop Bro
Exactly. It's a limited IPA at 6.0% ABV that emphasizes the appeal of bitterness while bringing berry-like and dank character. They've also released an amber lager called "HANABI" made with sansho pepper, so they're actively experimenting with Japanese ingredients. It looks like they'll also hold a brewery open day in April, and they're appearing at events at six venues nationwide.

An event where you can drink beer in a former school!? I definitely want to go!
