Bread Ale Brewery is the thing here: a bakery brewing beer. The brewing setup is inside "Bakery Komuginohoshi" in Sengawa.

A bakery making beer!? What do you mean?
Hop Bro
Bakeries bake extra so they don't run out, so unsold bread inevitably happens. The idea is to use that "loss bread" as beer ingredients. Development started in 2019, and at first they outsourced production, but in June 2024 they switched to in-house brewing. The brewing manager is Keiichi Oyama.

Turning food loss into beer...! Does the taste change depending on the type of bread?
Hop Bro
That's exactly the brewery's strength. "White" is a light white ale made with sliced bread, "Baguette" finishes with a pronounced bitterness using baguettes, and "Rye" brings out a unique tartness with rye bread. Even though they're all "bread beers," changing the bread makes them completely different.

Interesting! Are they releasing new ones too?
Hop Bro
"Bread Ale (West Coast IPA)" is brewed with roasted baguette breadcrumbs, and "Bread Ale (Hazy)" has a fragrance like ripe fruit and a creamy mouthfeel. They're steadily broadening the range of styles.

They can make Hazy IPA from bread too!

What's more, at the 2026 Japan Great Beer Awards, they won both gold and silver in the keg/draft category. With English Mild and one other label. For a bread-based beer to win gold in a contest, that's real strength.

Gold!? Amazing... Can you drink beer at the bakery?
Hop Bro
They pour from three taps inside the Sengawa Komuginohoshi shop. Draft beers are 660 yen a glass, and a tasting set is 1,100 yen. It's a one-of-a-kind experience where you can enjoy freshly baked bread and freshly made beer in the same place. It's about a 6-minute walk from Keio Line Sengawa Station.

Beer tasting at a bakery...! Bread and beer are both connected by wheat, so it's truly Komuginohoshi. I'll go on the weekend!
