Do you know Beppu Brewery? It’s a brewery right in the middle of the hot spring district, just a 1-minute walk from Beppu Station.

A brewery in a hot spring district!? So it’s beer after a bath?
Hop Bro
Exactly. The concept is straightforward: "after the bath." And the brewer here, Tatsushi Yasuda, is amazing. After spending 24 years doing nothing but desk work, he quit his corporate job because he wanted to make beer with his own hands and became a brewer.
Mugi
What, from 24 years of desk work!? And then he jumped into brewing?
Hop Bro
Yes. He made the switch powered purely by passion, and since opening in December 2022, he has produced more than 20 kinds of beer. The standard "YUAGARI PALE ALE" is a light, easy-drinking pale ale perfect for after a bath, while "BEPPU ONI IPA" is a bold brew loaded with three times the usual amount of hops. The "oni" name comes from Beppu’s oni legends.

Three times the hops! That sounds intense...! The name Oni IPA is great too.

They also make "BEPPU KABOSU WEIZEN," a weizen brewed with local Oita kabosu that even people who don’t usually like beer can enjoy. There’s also "Bengala Red" and "Lapis Blue," inspired by the scenery of Beppu’s Hells Tour, so just reading the beer names makes you feel like you’re traveling through Beppu.
Mugi
Inspired by the Hells Tour! The names alone are exciting!

The connections with other Kyushu breweries are interesting too. They’ve brewed a Cold IPA called "Ryuko Tenten," a collaboration with the Fukuoka beer bar esperanza. It features a muscat-like aroma brought out by thiol aroma, and GAME BREW from Saga also took part in the brewing.

A pale ale after the hot springs, beers inspired by Beppu’s Hells... this is Beppu sightseeing in a glass. I definitely want to go!
