What kind of brewery is KBL THE GARAGE?
Hop BroKBL THE GARAGE is Kyoto Beer Lab's second location, which opened in the Umekoji area in April 2024. It's tucked away in an alley behind the Kyoto Central Wholesale Market, and the atmosphere is completely different from the first location.
MugiBehind the market!? That's such a hidden spot. The name Garage sounds cool too.
Hop BroInside, there's a mural painted by the Australian artist Benji, and 14 beer taps. Seven beers brewed at KBL and seven brought over from the first location are on tap, so you can take in the whole Kyoto Beer Lab world in one go.
Mugi14 taps! And with mural art too, it's less of a beer bar and more of a cultural spot.
Hop BroThey also serve a Belgian Tripel called Abbey Ale, a hard-hitting one at 9.5% ABV. Originally, this place also hosted lots of non-beer fun, like DJ events and a monthly market called 'YANEURA MART.'

Hop BroWhat's interesting is the food: they have a '3D BBQ Burger' made with buns kneaded with spent grain. I like the idea of putting brewing by-products to use in food instead of wasting them. Dogs are welcome too.

Hop BroIn spring, they also hold an event called Open Brewery, where the head brewer explains beers that are still aging. It's a rare chance to see what's happening behind the brewing scenes.
MugiYou can taste beer while it's still aging!? Being able to experience the process as it grows, not just the finished product... I'm definitely going to Umekoji!
