Inkhorn Brewing introduces Hazy IPA 'White-eyed Vireo'
Tokyo's Inkhorn Brewing has introduced 'White-eyed Vireo', a 6.0% Hazy IPA. Despite its hazy appearance, the brewery describes it as dry and sharp, with a strong hop aroma, flavor, and bitterness.
Inkhorn Brewing, based in Mejiro, Toshima Ward, Tokyo, has introduced a new Hazy IPA called 'White-eyed Vireo'. The beer comes in at 6.0% ABV. In the post, the brewery explains that the name comes from a bird it found while researching the Japanese name for the species, and that the English name fit the bird's mejiro-like coloring.
The beer is described as very different from a typical hazy-looking IPA. Although it appears heavily turbid, the drinking experience is said to be dry and sharp. Hop aroma, flavor, and bitterness are all pushed forward, and the finish includes a slightly dry, powdery bitterness that may divide opinions. The brewery also hints at exploring stronger-hop beers with some residual sweetness in the future.
The recipe uses `Extra Pils`, `Wheat`, `Oats`, and `Carapils`, with `Citra LUPOMAX`, `Citra`, `Mosaic Cryo`, and `Strata`. For a brewery with a taproom in Mejiro, the beer fits a familiar Inkhorn pattern: hop-forward in aroma, but still carefully built around structure and finish.
