What kind of brewery is Harumi Beer Brewery?

Harumi Beer Brewery, the location alone is already interesting. It’s a brewery on the first floor of HARUMI FLAG’s Park Village, built on the former site of the Tokyo Olympic athletes’ village.

Wait, a brewery on the site of the athletes’ village!? You mean there’s a beer brewery inside an apartment complex?

Exactly. It’s a rare setup with brewing equipment inside a residential complex. It opened in March 2024, and it’s operated by Shibataya Saketen, a liquor wholesaler. They’re aiming for a casual, “neighborhood cafeteria”-type atmosphere, and manager Daigo Hombu says he wants it to be something like a local bakery.

A beer place like a bakery! That sounds nice. Somewhere you can just drop in?

That’s exactly it. The brewing is handled by chef-brewer Kamiya, and 5 of the 8 taps are house-brewed beers. The one to watch is “Harumi FLAG GOLD” - a crisp, fruity golden ale that’s an easy entry point even for beer beginners.

I’m glad they have something for beginners! What else do they have?

There’s also a brown ale called “Harumi 5-chome,” and that one was developed together with local residents as a collaborative beer. Starting out in a new neighborhood and brewing beer together with the people who live there isn’t something you see every day.

Developing the recipe with residents!? That’s amazing... it really feels like the beer of their own town!

And it’s only a 2-minute walk to Harumi Pier, so you can take it out and drink while looking at the sea. They also have an original 1L growler, and during the campaign it’s 1,980 yen. Plus, there’s no uncorking fee when you drink wine or beer bought in the shop in the dining space, which is pretty generous.

A growler by the sea! That’s the best! They also released a new one called “Harumi Black EX.Stout,” right?

hop happyHop Bro

Right, a 5.0% extra stout. It’s rich but still easy to drink, and the seasonal lineup changes make it fun to keep coming back. In a one-of-a-kind place on the former athletes’ village site, it’s a brewery that grows together with the new neighborhood. It’s a pretty unique place.
