Nara Brewing, based in Nara City, will release "TYPHINA" (Tifana), a Keller Pils created in collaboration with VERTERE in Okutama, Tokyo. The beer has an alcohol content of 5.5% and an IBU of 17. It will be offered on draft and in 350ml cans, with business-to-business online sales beginning at 12:00 on April 13 and general online sales beginning at 12:00 on April 17.
The project emerged from Nara Brewing's participation in OKTAMA BEER FEST, hosted by VERTERE, and from exchanges with the brewery's head brewer, Tsujino. During their discussions, the two sides came to the idea of recreating the "unfiltered pilsner" they had tasted on site and found memorable, and from there they arrived at the Keller Pils style.
Keller Pils is a lager that keeps carbonation slightly lower than a typical pilsner, making it easier to appreciate the malt sweetness and the delicate aroma of hops. All of Nara Brewing's beers are unfiltered to begin with, but this time they are expressing that nuance by shortening the conditioning period and packaging the beer before waiting for the yeast to settle. It has a slightly hazy appearance compared with a standard pilsner, and no wheat or oats are used.
The post says that when poured into a glass, it gives off a honey-like aroma, feels soft on the palate, and its lower carbonation makes it easy to keep drinking. VERTERE is also said to be releasing another collaboration beer in a different style, so there should be some enjoyment in tasting the two breweries' different interpretations side by side. It is a beer that combines Nara Brewing's characteristic understanding of style with a sense of narrative.
