What kind of brewery is Beer Vista Brewery?

There’s a brewpub called BEER VISTA BREWERY over by Morishita in Kiyosumi-shirakawa, and the way it came to be is a little unusual, which makes it interesting.

What’s unusual about it?

It’s operated by Backpackers' Japan, the company behind hostels and hotels. The brewer, Daisuke Furusato, originally worked there as a bartender, and apparently he wasn’t interested in craft beer at all.

Wait, someone who wasn’t interested in beer became a brewer?

The turning point was when overseas guests staying at the hostel brought in a beer from Shizuoka’s BAIRD BEER. That was his first encounter. After that, he increased the taps at the Kyoto hostel “Len” and at “CITAN” in Higashi-Nihonbashi, and during the COVID period he reportedly proposed to the company that they open a brewery so he could say, “Let’s make it ourselves.”

Wow! From hostel bartender to brewer? That’s incredibly dramatic!

Their concept is “A Pint of Imagination.” Rather than focusing only on specs, they aim for a beer you choose based on the situation you drink it in and the story behind it. It’s designed to be approachable even for people who aren’t beer geeks.

As a craft beer beginner, I actually really like that idea. What kind of beers do they have?

A staple is “TOKIWA HAZE,” a Hazy IPA. It’s named after the Tokiwa neighborhood where the shop is, and its features are a fruity citrus-hop aroma and a crisp, refreshing bitterness. They also make “LUSH,” a low-alcohol beer made with blueberries, and beers using kawachi bankan citrus.

I love that name, TOKIWA HAZE. Naming a beer after your own neighborhood really gives it such a strong local feel!

That’s exactly Furusato’s aim: he’s aiming to be “a small brewery rooted in the community for everyone.” Since you can see the brewing equipment in the back of the shop, you can drink while watching it being made. They also actively collaborate with other breweries, like the ORDINARY PLEASURE event with Nobody Brewing.
