"JIRI," a Beer That Reflects the Seasonal Landscape
The brewery Brasserie Knot in Tsurui Village, Hokkaido, announced "JIRI" as its May seasonal beer. Brasserie Knot was created by renovating a former elementary school into a brewery, and its official website carries the message, "Connecting with beer. Connecting through beer." One of its defining traits is its commitment to flavors that blend naturally into the landscapes of eastern Hokkaido, with a balanced, understated character that does not try to assert itself too strongly.
"JIRI" is introduced as a beer inspired by the dense fog that occurs in the Kushiro region from spring into early summer, commonly known as sea fog (jiri). Beer information sites list it as a Hazy IPA, ABV 7.0%, and IBU 39.0. Its hop-derived aroma centers on tropical notes such as pineapple, mango, and grapefruit. The haze from oats and wheat is said to contribute to its smooth mouthfeel and juiciness.
Brasserie Knot is also a "brewery you can visit," with a direct sales shop on-site, as well as tastings and growler fills by weight. Its approach of expressing the feel of the local environment and the changing seasons as beers rooted in the land is one of this brewery's greatest appeals. May's "JIRI" is also a seasonal release worth watching from Tsurui Village.
