Hiroshima Neighborly Brewing Releases Third Barrel-Aged Wheat Wine, “Rinki Sakurabane”
Hiroshima City’s Hiroshima Neighborly Brewing has released the third installment in its barrel-aged beer series, “Rinki Sakurabane BARREL AGED WHEAT WINE,” in limited quantities. A beer aged for about 19 months, it was made using barrels from local sake and winery producers.
Hiroshima Neighborly Brewing has released a new wheat wine as the third installment in its barrel-aged series, “Rinki Sakurabane.” The product name is “Rinki Sakurabane BARREL AGED WHEAT WINE.” In an Instagram post, the brewery announced that it was being “released today,” and sales are limited in quantity.
This release stands out for using two distinct types of barrels: one that previously held Sakurao single malt whisky from SAKURAO BREWERY & DISTILLERY in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima; one that previously held red wine from VINOBLE VINEYARD, a winery in Miyoshi, Hiroshima Prefecture; and, additionally, a barrel that had been used to mature peated whisky. HNB’s wheat wine was brewed into each barrel, then aged for about 19 months before being blended.
The finished beer layers the gentle tartness derived from wheat in the original wheat wine with wine-barrel nuances, fruitiness, peat-derived smokiness, and the aroma of the barrels themselves. With an alcohol content of 8%, it has been crafted as a beer meant to be savored slowly. The product page lists it as a “set of three bottles,” priced at 4,840 yen including tax.
