Free Spirits Brewing, based in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, announced its new beer, Mariposa IPA, on Instagram on March 18, 2026, saying it had been put on tap at the shop.

According to the post, the beer is a dry, clean American IPA. It uses three hop varieties, Chinook, Amarillo, and Mosaic, and is intended to express aromas of pine, citrus, and a subtle hint of guava. It is designed to have a juicy, satisfying body while finishing crisp and refreshing.

The specs are ABV 7% and IBU 30. The malts listed are Ale malt, Pilsner malt, Dextrin malt, and Caramel Malt. Carrageenan is also used as an adjunct.

The brewer's note also mentions that feedback and insights gained through discussions with other brewers before brewing were reflected in the recipe. The whirlpool temperature was set lower than before, and the pH during the mash-to-kettle process was also adjusted. By revising the process to reduce hop-derived astringency and harshness, the beer reportedly achieved a more vibrant aroma from the mid-palate through the top notes.

Free Spirits Brewing is a brewery and restaurant in Himeji, and the maker focuses on American-style IPAs while also brewing beers that use local ingredients. This Mariposa IPA seems to embody that stance of delivering the appeal of American hops in a straightforward way.
