Shiga Kogen Beer Releases Barrel-Aged Yama-Bushi Blueberry Red
Shiga Kogen Beer of Yamanouchi, Nagano, has announced Yama-Bushi Blueberry Red, a 500ml can combining homegrown blueberries with barrel-aged red. Built on a dry saison brewed with Kinmon Nishiki rice, the limited beer layers fruit, tannin and barrel complexity.
Shiga Kogen Beer has introduced Yama-Bushi Blueberry Red, a 500ml can featured by Tamamura-Honten in connection with Harvest Festival 2026.
The base beer is a dry saison made with Kinmon Nishiki, a sake rice variety from Nagano. The brewery then adds blueberries grown by Tamamura-Honten and hand-picked one by one by its employees. Barrel-aged red is blended into the beer to complete the recipe.
The blueberries contribute a deep color and a distinct tannic impression, while the barrel-aged red adds acidity and layers of mature, wine-like complexity. Tamamura-Honten describes the beer as having an appearance that is “already more like wine,” signaling a profile that goes beyond straightforward fruit sweetness.
Shiga Kogen Beer is produced by Tamamura-Honten in Yamanouchi, Nagano. The company has a long history of sake brewing and develops beers inspired by the landscape and agricultural products of the Shiga Kogen area. Its Yama-Bushi project takes inspiration from Belgian brewing while pursuing expressions rooted in Japan.
The Yama-Bushi range includes barrel-aged sour ales such as red, as well as limited beers made with the brewery’s own blueberries. This new blueberry red brings together the dryness of saison, the fruit and tannin of blueberries, and the acidity and oak-derived depth of barrel-aged red.
It should appeal to drinkers who enjoy complex, food-friendly beers and cellar-style releases. Serving it slowly and allowing the temperature to rise may reveal further fruit and barrel nuances.
