Released on April 14 as a spring-summer limited item
Sankt Gallen Brewery will sell its fruit happoshu "Shonan Gold," made with the Kanagawa-grown orange "Shonan Gold," as a spring-summer limited release from April 14 through the end of September. The release date falls on Orange Day, and it has long been offered as a standard product that signals the start of this season each year.
Designed to use off-grade fruit whole
The ingredients make use of Shonan Gold oranges with blemishes or sizes outside the standard specifications. The fruit is used whole, without wasting either the peel or the juice, and about 500 kg is used in a single brew. The base is a wheat ale made with 20% wheat malt, and the hop chosen is Citra, known for its citrus aroma. The goal is a juicy, refreshing flavor that highlights the fruit's aroma.
A seasonal beer grown by the brewery in Atsugi
Sankt Gallen, based in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture, is known as the "original craft beer shop" that was brewing on a small scale in the United States before craft beer was legalized in Japan. Shonan Gold began as a test brew in 2007 and has been produced as a spring-summer limited label since 2008; from 2009 it has also been enjoyed as the official beer of Shonan Bellmare. The regular version is 330 ml and costs 539 yen including tax. On April 14, a special version called "Super Shonan Gold," made with twice the amount of fruit, will also be added, expanding the fun of tasting them side by side.
