Mangosteen Brewing Lab of Hokuto, Yamanashi, has released NEW COLONY, a farmhouse ale and one of the brewery’s foundational beers. The beer is presented as a new release of the flagship beer first brewed by the brewery.

NEW COLONY uses a simple malt bill and keeps bitterness restrained. Its character comes primarily from fermentation: fruity and floral yeast notes are joined by a spicy nuance reminiscent of clove. The beer is listed at 5.5% ABV and 20 IBU, making it a saison that emphasizes yeast expression and malt sweetness rather than assertive hop flavor.

This version is described as drier than previous releases, with a more pronounced clove-like character. Its crisp, refreshing profile should make it suitable for warm-weather drinking, while the moderate bitterness and spice suggest that it can also work comfortably alongside food.

The name NEW COLONY refers to the idea of a colony: a gathering of organisms or people from the same or different fields. The brewery connects that concept with the relationships and cooperation it has found around Hokuto and the Akeno area. The name reflects a wish to form a new community in the region, with that community gradually growing over time.

Mangosteen Brewing Lab operates in Hokuto, a mountainous area surrounded by the Yatsugatake and Southern Alps ranges. The brewery’s wider MANGOSTEEN HOKUTO complex also includes Mangosteen Liquors, a bottle shop and taproom, and Mangosteen Bao, a food space. Working with local ingredients, produce, and people is central to the brewery’s approach to what it calls the next stage of craft beer.

With its restrained bitterness, dry finish, and expressive saison yeast, NEW COLONY offers a direct taste of that regional philosophy.
