Paddle Brew. The representative here, Takuya Arai, comes from a family that has run the mountain lodge "Kenzan Chojo Hutte" at the summit of Mount Tsurugi since his great-grandfather's generation.
Mugi
A mountain-lodge family! So how does that connect to the brewery?
Hop Bro
He originally worked at the Tokushima Shimbun for seven years, but after leaving he became involved in the family lodge business. A turning point seems to have come in 2014, when he visited Portland, USA, and was struck by the diversity of craft beer.
Mugi
Portland is a mecca for craft beer, after all. So that led him into brewing?
Hop Bro
He trained at Advanced Brewing in Tokyo and Jazz Brewing Fujino in Kanagawa, then opened in Anabuki, Mima City in June 2022. What's more, he is also an adventurer who has canoed down Canada's Yukon River for more than 3,200 km.
Mugi
3,200 km!? What an incredible person... What kind of place is the brewery?
Hop Bro
It's a hut converted from the shed at his home, surrounded by forest and river, with a brewing batch size of just 120 liters. They actually compare and choose the water from upstream of the Anabuki River for brewing. It's water from a river said to be Shikoku's finest clear stream.
Mugi
Beer made with clear-stream water, huh. What kinds of labels do they have?
Hop Bro
Woodcutter's Weizen is a weizen with cedar character; fresh, it's spicy, and with aging it develops a wine-like dryness. Mountain Lodge Porter is an English-style porter made with kuromoji, a Japanese aromatic wood, and naming it after the mountain lodge really feels like Arai-san.
Mugi
Cedar and kuromoji! Forest ingredients are becoming beer itself!
Hop Bro
They focus mainly on New Zealand hops, and aim to be a user of NZ hops. Because their concept is "beer that brings people out into nature," every label introduces a setting where you can enjoy it in the mountains or by the river.
Mugi
A brewery that unites the outdoors and beer is something new. A Weizen after playing in the river sounds amazing! I want to visit the Anabuki River!
