A new beer shaped by Iya

Paddle Brew, based in Mima, Tokushima, introduced a new collaboration beer called "Sobusigin 2026" through Instagram. The project was created with Chiiori, a thatched house in Iya that has stood for more than 300 years. In the post, the brewery says the beer was inspired by an imagined scene in which Heike refugees in Iya made and enjoyed drinks using grain dried over an irori hearth and mountain plants.

The beer is a Smoked Saison. It is built around a smoke aroma reminiscent of a hearth, with sansho used as a secondary ingredient. The listed specs are 350 ml and 7.0% ABV.

Paddle Brew has a base in Tokushima and a brewing style that connects beer with local landscape and stories. This release fits that approach well: it links the history of Iya, the atmosphere of a traditional building, and a modern craft beer format in one expression.

For drinkers who look for beers with a strong sense of place, this is an interesting example of how regional memory can be translated into flavor.
