Paddle Brew is a brewery based in Mima City, Tokushima Prefecture, that has been dedicated to making craft beer under the idea of “making nature more fun.” On its official website, it introduces its new base as the “Paddle Brew Mt. Tsurugi Brewery,” aiming to make beer that takes advantage of the high-altitude environment at the trailhead of Mt. Tsurugi and the spring water refined beneath the sacred peak.

In this Instagram post, the company said production had started at the new brewery and that it had already brewed three batches. During relocations and startup phases, it often takes time to adjust equipment and stabilize brewing, but the fact that it has already moved on to multiple batches suggests that actual production is getting off to a smooth start.

The company has also previously highlighted its individuality as a small-scale brewery, using water from the Anabuki River and local ingredients. An introductory article in the Tokushima Shimbun also featured its lineup tied to the local landscape, including beers themed around rivers, forests, and mountains, as well as products made with cedar chips. As operations at the new brewery move forward, it may allow this regionally rooted beer-making to develop more steadily.

Paddle Brew’s new production base is not just an expansion, but the next step toward turning the natural environment of Mt. Tsurugi itself into flavor. It will be worth following along with the brewing progress to see what kinds of beers emerge from this place.
