The "Noh" in Hiroshima Noh Brewery uses the character for "agriculture." It's both a brewery and a farm.

A farmer making beer!? What do you mean?

The brewmaster, Antonio Luis Okada, has quite an interesting background. He originally ran a web production company in Hiroshima City, but in 2014 he joined the regional revitalization volunteer team in Miyoshi City and started farming.

From web producer to farmer, and then beer!? That is a huge leap!

After starting farming, he made green juice and jam, but hit a wall: he wanted a product that could be sold year-round. Then his wife suggested that craft beer could use all kinds of agricultural products, and that led him to open the brewery in 2022.
Mugi
So it all started with his wife's idea! What local products from Miyoshi are they using?

What's amazing is this: "HASSAKU SAISON" is a saison made with local hassaku and sansho, and it won gold at the Japan Great Beer Awards 2025. "Pione Ale" is an ale made with Miyoshi's famous Pione grapes and won silver. What's more, they placed in the JGBA for three consecutive years, with silver in 2023, bronze in 2024, and gold in 2025.

They're leveling up every year... amazing!

"CHA IPA" is an IPA made with yacon tea, "Caramel Honey Stout" is a crisp dry stout made with domestic honey, and "Mochimugi GOLD" is a golden ale made with mochi barley. They even hand-grow hops on the brewery grounds, and they brew on an ultra-small scale of just 150 liters per batch.
Mugi
They grow their own hops too!? I heard they also use produce that doesn't meet market standards.
Hop Bro
Exactly. They actively use oddly shaped vegetables and fruit to help reduce food waste as well. Miyoshi sits in a basin with three major rivers flowing through it, and the large temperature swings between day and night make its agricultural products especially rich in flavor. They have turned a total of 21 varieties into products, including 6 regular offerings.

From web producer to regional revitalization volunteer to farmer-brewer, what an incredible life... Hassaku, sansho, Pione grapes, and yacon tea, the ingredient lineup is too interesting! I want to go to Miyoshi and experience farm-brewed beer!
