Ishikawa Brewery is on another scale. Founded in 1863, it's a long-established brewery in Fussa with over 160 years of history, and it actually brewed beer once in 1887, during the Meiji era.

Wait, beer in the Meiji era!? That far back?

At the time, though, the facilities couldn't keep up, so they withdrew from brewing beer once. During the war, the beer kettle was even buried in the ground. Then in 1998, they revived beer brewing for the first time in 111 years with "Tama no Megumi."

111 years later...! That's amazing romance...!

The brewing site, "Mukai Kura Beer Workshop," uses a warehouse that is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. They use natural water drawn from 150 meters underground for brewing water, and because it's medium-hard water, the overall flavor comes out gentle and rounded.

They're brewing beer in a cultural property!? What kinds of labels do they have?
Hop Bro
"Tama no Megumi" has Pale Ale, Pilsner, and Dunkel, and the other brand, "TOKYO BLUES," has Session Ale, Golden Ale, and Single Hop Wheat. They also have a revival version of "TOYODA BEER," which was brewed in Hino during the Meiji era.

A revival beer too! Have they won anything recently?

At the 2026 Japan Great Beer Awards, they won awards for four labels. "Tama no Megumi Pale Ale" and "Tama no Megumi Dunkel" won silver, and there were also two gold awards. Brewing lead Tomoki Tsuchiya joined as an intern while in vocational school and is now the head brewer. He says he wants to keep classical brewing at the core while also taking on new styles in seasonal limited releases.

Four labels! There's a restaurant on the grounds too, right?

There's the Italian restaurant "Fussa Beer House" and the Japanese restaurant "Zatsugura," where you can pair dishes with freshly made Tama no Megumi. You can tour the brewery too, and they hold a Thank You Day every fourth Saturday and Sunday of the month. They even built lodging facilities. It's no wonder they're called a "theme park for drinkers."

You can stay overnight!? One day isn't enough! I'm definitely going!
