Tachikawa's Tachihi Brewery is seriously on another level. In the 2023 World Beer Awards, Tachihi Pilsner took the world title in the Czech Style Pilsner category.

What! World title!? Even beating breweries from the Czech Republic, the home of the style?
Hop Bro
Yes, it won both Country Winner and World’s Best Gold. And that’s not all: at the 2022 International Beer Cup, the Belgian White won gold and became the world champion; at the 2024 IBC, the Pilsner won gold again; and at the 2026 JGBA, the Pale Ale won silver and the Weizen won bronze. The awards just keep coming.

They opened in 2021, right? It’s incredible that they’ve achieved that much in just a few years!

The head brewer, Hideaki Shimizu, was born in Tachikawa and spent years as a brewing director at breweries in Tokyo. He joined Tachihi Holdings because he wanted to make beer in his hometown.

Coming back home and making a world-class beer there is so dramatic...
Hop Bro
Shimizu-san is extremely particular too. They use only malt, hops, yeast, and water. No adjuncts at all. They tailor the hops to each style: Czech Saaz for the Pilsner, New Zealand Nelson Sauvin for the Weizen, and Huell Melon for the Belgian White.

Wow, they even care about where the hops come from. I'm also curious about something called Afterburner 44...
Hop Bro
Nice eye! It's a powerful golden ale with twice the hop load. The name comes from Tachihi's predecessor, Tachikawa Aircraft. The brewery itself is on the site of the former aircraft factory, and the warehouse-like gray building is seriously cool.
Mugi
They're brewing beer on the site of an aircraft factory!? And using just one-third the water of a typical brewery too, so it's environmentally friendly as well. Definitely worth going to Tachikawa for a drink.
