WHITE DOG BREWING is in Uraga, and the story behind how it started is really interesting. The owner, Kei Onozaki, and his wife, Ryoko, were both textile designers in the apparel industry to begin with.

What? From fabric design to beer!? That's a completely different world!

They moved from Tokyo to Uraga in 2018, gained brewing experience at breweries in Yokosuka and Hayama, and then opened their own brewery in February 2024. By the way, the name "WHITE DOG" comes from their beloved dog's name.
Mugi
Their dog's name! And dogs are allowed too? That's amazing.

The beer is great too. "Uraga Perry Ale" is a pale ale designed to be easy to drink even for Uraga locals who are new to craft beer. "Tiger Dance IPA" is a hazy IPA inspired by Uraga's traditional performing art, "tora-odori" (tiger dance).
Mugi
They named a beer after tiger dancing!? That's some serious local pride!

The standout is "Saku Gorilla." It's an apple IPA that uses a whopping 120 kg of apple juice from local Nakata Farm.
Mugi
120 kg!? That's not just apple juice!

They've also started making bottled beer, and Kei is extremely particular about freshness and preventing oxidation. He wasn't satisfied with the usual counter-pressure method, so he came up with his own techniques, from CO2 pressurization to pouring speed and even how the foam is handled. It feels like the precision from his days as a textile designer really shows up in his brewing.
Mugi
"Customers wanted to drink it at home" and "take it as a souvenir," so that's why they started bottling, right? It's only a two-minute walk from Uraga Station, and you can see the brewing tanks through the glass in the taproom, right? I want to go!

A golden ale made with Niagara grape skins and limited-edition botanical beers are also fun examples of how they bring a designer's sense of color into brewing.
