Hansharo Beer Unveils Limited Gose “Shouga-Aru” with ermhoi and Marty Holoubek
Hansharo Beer, based in Izunokuni, Shizuoka, has announced “Shouga-Aru,” a limited collaborative beer created with BAR HAPPY END bartender Shogo Kurihara and musicians ermhoi and marty holoubek. Built on the German gose style, the beer layers rosemary, pink pepper, ginger, and amanatsu citrus for a cocktail-like balance of harmony and individuality.
A collaborative take on gose
“Shouga-Aru” was developed through repeated tastings and conversations among professionals from different fields. Hansharo Beer worked with Shogo Kurihara of BAR HAPPY END, along with musicians ermhoi and marty holoubek, to determine the beer’s style and flavor profile.
The chosen base is gose, a German summer beer traditionally brewed with salt and coriander. Hansharo Beer reinterprets the style with ginger, rosemary, pink pepper, and amanatsu, a Japanese citrus fruit. The result keeps the refreshing character associated with gose while introducing a more layered, cocktail-inspired expression.
Rosemary contributes a cooling herbal note, pink pepper adds a gentle spice character, and amanatsu brings bright citrus aroma and acidity. Ginger helps connect the elements and sharpen the finish. Rather than allowing one ingredient to dominate, the recipe is designed so that the components coexist in balance while retaining their individual identities.
A brewery rooted in Izunokuni
Hansharo Beer was established in 1997 by Kuraya Narusawa in Izunokuni, Shizuoka. The brewery operates near the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace, part of the UNESCO-listed Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution. Alongside its core beers, Hansharo Beer produces a wide range of limited releases that explore local ingredients, classic styles, and collaborations beyond the brewing world.
That combination of tradition and experimentation is central to “Shouga-Aru.” As the weather begins to cool, the beer is intended to be enjoyed while taking in its rosemary, spice, and amanatsu notes—ideally alongside the music of ermhoi and marty holoubek.
