COEDO to Host Domestic Barley Sowing Experience in Kisarazu on November 15
COEDO Brewery and Oisikul are launching a project to grow domestic barley and turn it into beer. The first event, a barley sowing experience, will take place in Kisarazu, Chiba, on November 15, 2026. Participants will help begin the agricultural process behind a future COEDO beer.
COEDO Brewery is partnering with Oisikul on a project to grow domestic barley and use it in future beer production. The first event, a barley sowing experience, will be held on November 15, 2026, in a field near KURKKU FIELDS in Kisarazu, Chiba.
The event will not take place at COEDO’s brewery. Participants will gather at the parking lot of Nissen Chemical Co., Ltd.’s Second Factory and walk approximately five minutes to the field. The program runs from 2:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m., with registration beginning at 1:45 p.m. Capacity is limited to 10 people, and participation costs ¥1,100. Visitors must arrive by car and should bring clothes and shoes that can get dirty, work gloves, drinking water, a hat, a towel, and rain gear if needed. The event will proceed in rainy weather unless cancellation is announced by 6:00 p.m. the previous day.
After an orientation, participants will spend about 75 minutes sowing barley before sharing reflections on the experience. An optional KURKKU FIELDS tour will also be available from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for ¥800. The tour includes an introduction to wheat and barley while exploring the sustainable farm and park.
According to National Tax Agency data, domestic barley accounted for approximately 4% of the projected demand for malt used in beer and whisky in fiscal 2023. Based in Higashimatsuyama, Saitama, COEDO has been exploring its own barley cultivation and brewing approaches connected to koji, a traditional Japanese fermentation culture.
The project is expected to continue with activities such as barley treading, harvesting, and a brewery tour. COEDO plans to blend barley harvested in 2027 with barley from its craft beer brewery and use the mixture to make beer. Applications are available through the external registration site linked in the original announcement.
