An IPA Inspired by Champagne

Kagiya Brewery’s new release, “Champagne Supernova,” is a Brut IPA designed to explore the space between beer and champagne. Rather than turning the beer into a wine substitute, the brewery aims to preserve the character of both drinks: the aromatic intensity of an IPA and the light, celebratory impression of champagne.

The beer uses Nelson Sauvin hops, known for their white-grape and wine-like aromas, together with muscat grape juice. Its fruit-forward character does not come from leaving behind sweetness. Instead, the beer is fermented to consume as much residual sugar as possible, creating an exceptionally dry and crisp finish that allows the grape-like aromas to stand out.

“Champagne Supernova” is listed as Brut IPA #032, with an alcohol content of 6.0 percent, an IBU of 20, and an SRM of 3.1. Kagiya recommends serving it well chilled in a wine glass or flute glass, where the muscat and Nelson Sauvin aromas can develop more clearly. Suggested food pairings include seafood, cured ham, and fresh cheeses.

The name comes from Oasis’s song “Champagne Supernova.” The combination of champagne and a supernova reflects the brewery’s idea of bringing contrasting elements together to create something vivid and memorable.

Based in Nakahara Ward, Kawasaki, Kagiya Brewery is a regional craft brewery that produces its beers by hand. The brewery operates a taproom in Musashi-Nakahara as well as beer bars in Musashi-Kosugi and Jiyugaoka. With limited production and a focus on approachable, flavorful ales, Kagiya continues to develop beers for both experienced drinkers and those new to craft beer.

With its wine-like aroma, dry finish, and IPA foundation, “Champagne Supernova” offers a distinctive option for drinkers looking to enjoy craft beer at the table or raise a glass in a more celebratory setting.
