Baeren Brewery in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, has introduced a limited-edition beer, "Maibock," with a springtime feel. It went on sale on April 10, 2026, and will be sold in limited quantities through the brewery's direct sales shop and web store.

Maibock is a German-style bock beer with a slightly higher alcohol content and a flavor that highlights the richness and umami of malt. In Germany, it is cherished as a "May beer" that signals the arrival of spring, because it tastes even better after aging through the winter. Baeren Brewery also gave it a longer-than-usual aging period, finishing it in a form close to its authentic taste.

Baeren Brewery is a brewery that continues to make classic European-style beer in Morioka, using brewing equipment more than 100 years old that was relocated from southern Germany. While valuing traditional methods, one of the brewery's strengths is its ability to show different expressions through seasonal limited releases. Maibock is a fine example of that approach.

Early spring tends to draw attention toward light lagers, but the thick, full-bodied flavor of a well-aged bock is better suited to slow, relaxed drinking. If pairing it with food, it would likely go well with meat dishes, savory grilled foods, and dishes with a touch of sweetness.
