Baeren Brewery has released “Colonia,” a Kölsch-style beer originating in Cologne, Germany. Kölsch is the only beer style in the world whose appellation is legally protected. For that reason, Baeren chose “Colonia,” the former name of Cologne, as the product name.

“Colonia” is a pale ale with a light, easy-drinking character. Its use of top-fermenting yeast gives it a bright aroma, and it is known for a clean, smooth finish that goes down easily. In Cologne, it is customary to enjoy the same beer over and over in small 200 ml glasses called a Stange, and that drinking style is sometimes compared to eating wanko soba.

Baeren Brewery is based in Kitayama, Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, and brews beer using equipment moved from Germany more than 100 years ago. For a brewery that has delivered handmade beer while respecting European traditions, Colonia can be said to perfectly reflect that stance.

What makes this product interesting is that you can enjoy not only the beer style itself, but also the background behind its name. Within its brisk, easy-drinking character, it is drawing attention as a beer that carries the history of Cologne and Baeren’s respect for craftsmanship.
