GOOD HOPS, based in Tono, Iwate Prefecture, released a new product, “Tono no Kaze,” on April 1. GOOD HOPS is a brewery that consistently handles hop cultivation, brewing, and research, and it continues to make beer that makes the most of the region’s hop resources.
This time, “Tono no Kaze” is an IPA made with 100% Tono-grown hops. It is built around the brewery’s newly developed hop variety “No Wind,” paired with Tono-grown Magnum and Saaz. According to official information, the beer is designed for a light drinking experience, layering soft, sweet hop-derived aromas with fresh fruit notes reminiscent of green apple and pear.
On the product page, No Wind is described as “a hop that shows different expressions depending on how it is used.” Based on what the brewery has learned so far, this “Tono no Kaze” was designed to bring out that aromatic character even more strongly. The name also comes from the association with “Tono No Wind,” evoking the image of wind blowing through Tono’s hop fields.
Sales began at 3:00 p.m. on April 1 for business customers, and at 5:00 p.m. the same day for general consumers. It will be available both on tap and in cans, making it easy to enjoy at restaurants or at home. How does a brewery rooted in the region express the character of Tono-grown hops within the familiar IPA style? This is a beer worth watching as a distinctly local creation.
