A dark beer for the 2nd anniversary

Uchoten Brewing, based in Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture, introduced "Jazz / Irish Dry Stout" as the anniversary beer for its taproom's second anniversary event. In the post, it is positioned as a beer that aims to be a "dark ale you can drink smoothly," in the spirit of a beer style born in Ireland.

The intended finish

This beer was designed with a roasted character reminiscent of coffee and dark chocolate, along with a smooth mouthfeel. While it looks firmly black, the drinking experience is on the lighter side, with the goal of a dry finish that keeps sweetness in check. Alcohol content is 4.3%, and the IBU is 28.

Recipe highlights

On the ingredient side, Minch Hook Head Pale Malt forms the base, Melanoidin adds body, and Chocolate malt supplements color and flavor. It also combines Flaked Barley to improve head retention and mouthfeel, and Roasted Barley, which provides the core of the stout's strong roasted aroma. Fuggle hops are used simply, and Wy1335 British Ale II was selected for the yeast.

The intent behind the name

The beer's name, "Jazz," is said to come from A Tribe Called Quest's second album, The Low End Theory. The post also reveals that the name was chosen because it fit the image of a red-and-black anniversary release.

What beer fans should note

Stouts are a style where it is not enough to simply bring out strong roast character; balancing bitterness, sweetness, and mouthfeel is difficult. From this post, it is clear that Uchoten Brewing carefully assembled this beer for its second-anniversary milestone, aiming to unite a black appearance with a light, easy-drinking finish. As a commemorative beer for the taproom, it looks like one that will mark the brewery's current position.
