Uchoten Brewing shared Great Day on Instagram as a Belgian-style strong blonde. The post highlights fermentation-derived aromas of orange and pear, restrained spice, a solid malt character, and a clean finish.

Recipe and fermentation

The beer uses Wyeast 3522 Belgian Ardennes. Fermentation started cool to keep phenols in check, then gradually warmed to build fruity esters. The grist is built around Belgian pilsner malt, with wheat, Carabelge, and Abbey malt adding body and depth.

Hops and balance

Aurora is used for bittering, Styrian Kolibri in the middle of the boil, and Saaz plus Mandarina Bavaria from the end of the boil and whirlpool. The hop bill is meant to support the yeast character rather than dominate it, adding a light herbal and citrus layer. Sugar is also used, keeping the 7.5% beer from feeling too heavy.

Inspiration

The beer is an homage to the blond ale from Dageraad Brewing in Burnaby, Canada, a brewery the brewer visited many times during a working holiday. The name comes from the Madvillain track “Great Day”, which the post says matches the beer’s floating, quietly uplifting mood.

For a brewery based in Suwa, Nagano, the beer shows a clear focus on Belgian-inspired balance: expressive yeast, measured spice, and a body that sits between Blond and Golden Strong Ale.
