Uchoten Brewing in Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture, has released "Excursions / Irish Red Ale" as the anniversary beer for its taproom's second-year event. In the post, the brewery explains that this beer was reconstructed into a form they would want to drink now, using memories of Irish Red Ale from their student days as a starting point.
The recipe is based on Irish pale malt, combined with Crystal Light, Crystal Medium, Melanoidin, and Roasted Barley. The hops are Fuggle, and the yeast is Wy1335 British Ale II. Flaked Barley was also added, bringing the design to ABV 4.3% and IBU 23. While it offers caramel and toasty malt flavors, the goal was to avoid pushing sweetness too far forward and finish dry.
According to the brewery's explanation, Roasted Barley contributes to the red hue and a dry aftertaste, while Fuggle plays more of a balancing role than one that strongly asserts itself aromatically. Rather than aiming for a beer that stands out with flashy individuality, it reflects an intention to make a "daily ale" that people naturally reach for after work or on an unremarkable day off.
The beer name "Excursions" comes from the track of the same name on A Tribe Called Quest's album The Low End Theory. The post cites the fact that this is a 2nd anniversary release, along with the way the red-and-black jacket design matches the impression of the song title, as reasons for the choice. As the first beer in the anniversary series, it is a bottle that quietly, yet with real backbone, marks the taproom's milestone.
