Onomichi Brewery in Onomichi, Hiroshima, is bringing back Shokki Red Ale for the autumn season. The beer is released in connection with the city’s traditional Betcha Festival, held annually from November 1 to 3.

The name Shokki comes from one of the festival’s three demon figures: Beta, Soba, and Shokki. Shokki is depicted with a red face, making the connection with the red ale both direct and distinctly local.

The beer is brewed with Delaware grapes grown in Onomichi and fermented with wine yeast. Its copper color and wine-like aroma set it apart from a conventional red ale, while the malt backbone gives the beer structure. The brewery lists the alcohol content at 6% ABV.

Shokki Red Ale is part of Onomichi Brewery’s broader approach to brewing with local ingredients. Other beers in its lineup include Onomichi Ale, made with locally grown lemons, and Shimanami Golden Ale, which incorporates Onomichi-grown citrus. The brewery operates from a renovated storehouse dating back to 1894 and focuses on making beers rooted in the area.

For visitors, the beer offers a way to experience the Betcha Festival through both its name and ingredients. It should also make a fitting stop after exploring Onomichi’s streets and autumn scenery, offering a seasonal taste of the city’s brewing culture.
