What kind of brewery is Shimaguni Brewery Okinawa?
Hop Bro
Shimaguni Brewery Okinawa in Uruma City has a founding story that feels like a movie.
Mugi
Shimaguni Brewery? Nice name. Is there a story behind it?
Hop Bro
Okinawa-born bartender Taiki Gibu and New Zealand-born brewer Michael Patterson met in Australia in 2010, then reunited in Okinawa and launched the brewery.
Mugi
What! They met in Australia and reunited in Okinawa? Since both are from island nations, that’s why it’s called Shimaguni Brewery!
Hop Bro
Exactly, that’s the origin of the name. And it’s also Japan’s only container brewery. One batch is about 140 liters, which works out to just under 400 bottles if you convert it to 330 ml bottles.
Mugi
Just under 400 bottles!? That’s extremely small-scale.
Hop Bro
That’s why they can craft each batch carefully within a reach that feels personal. The signature Golden Ale, with its bright citrus aroma, is a perfect fit for Okinawa’s heat and is their No. 1 favorite. Their Hazy IPA has also won gold at the International Beer Cup.
Mugi
A gold medal at an international competition! Amazing that world-class beer comes out of a small container brewery.
Hop Bro
Their lineup is broad too. The NZ Pilsner is brewed with 100% New Zealand hops, bringing aromas of citrus and tropical fruit. It feels like an homage to Michael’s home country. They’ve also done limited brews like Cacao Porter in collaboration with LIVES CHOCOLATE.
Mugi
Cacao Porter! A chocolate-and-beer collaboration sounds delicious. Even the NZ Pilsner has a story behind it.
Hop Bro
There’s a taproom and bottle shop next to the brewery, and at night it also operates as BAR LADYBIRD. Their concept, "Beer is a journey," ties in with the story of how the two of them met.
Mugi
"Beer is a journey"...! Two people who met in Australia, taking on the world from a container in Okinawa. That phrase fits perfectly. I want to go drink there!
