Koshiki Brewery

Do you know Koshikishima in Kagoshima? It's a remote island of Satsumasendai City, and at the southernmost part of Shimokoshiki Town, Teuchi, there's Koshiki Brewery, the island's first craft beer brewery.

The representative, Hiroyuki Matsuda, renovated his grandparents' house and turned it into a brewery. What's interesting is that it was built together with more than 100 companions. He split up the building's blueprints and sold each pillar, roof, and wall as an NFT (digital certificate), one by one.

They're sold on KDDI's αU market, and buyers can become partial owners of the brewery. Because it's on a remote island, it's a system that lets people far away get involved as stakeholders too.

And it's really unique. They make an amber lager called "Sympathy For The Devil" using jabara, a citrus fruit grown on the island, and a session IPA called "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" with island lemon. Pretty daring beer names, right?

Exactly. They also make beers with other island ingredients like chomeiso and daidai, and they're even testing hop cultivation on the island. Their stance is amazing: they keep asking, "Is this contributing to the future of Koshikishima?" and keep turning every island ingredient they can find into beer.
