Taros Brewing

There’s a brewery called Taros Brewing in Honkawa-cho, Hiroshima, and the origin of the name is especially interesting.

It comes from three generations of “Taro” in the founder’s family: the representative, Kenta Taro Miwa; his grandfather, Kintaro; and his son, Taro. The plural “TAROS” refers to those three generations of Taro.

Mr. Miwa started a beer specialty shop called hangout in Nagarekawa, Hiroshima in 2014, and for about 10 years after that, he kept nurturing his dream of brewing his own beer. In 2023, he relocated to Honkawa-cho and finally opened the brewery he had long wanted.

And on top of that, he handles almost everything himself: production, shipping, event booths, and running the pub. Even so, the beer quality is incredible. He’s especially strong with Hazy IPAs. “Mother’s Milk” is a 6% Hazy IPA with aromas of white grapes and peach, and a silky, milky mouthfeel. “Topology” is a 7% Hazy IPA made with Cryo Citra, Galaxy, and Cryo Mosaic hops, with aromas of grapefruit and muscat grapes.

Totally. There’s also an oat cream session hazy IPA called “Otonage-shiki,” which uses Nelson Sauvin hops for white-grape-like aromas and lactose to give it body. It’s only 4.5%, but it still has real drinking satisfaction. It’s a clever design.

Mr. Miwa’s philosophy is, “I don’t want to be fixated on style labels; I want people to drink something that is truly delicious.” Because the attached pub, hangout, can serve freshly made beer at a low price, he wants to deliver it not just for special occasions but as an everyday beer.
