What kind of brewery is Ichioka Beer Workshop: Journey to the Underworld?
Hop Bro
Ichioka Beer Workshop "Journey to the Underworld" in Bentencho has a birth story that feels like a movie.
Mugi
Journey to the Underworld? What kind of sci-fi name is that?
Hop Bro
This place used to be an ironworks, but it went bankrupt about 30 years ago. Then the remaining workers, on a whim, dug into the ground and found a hot spring.
Mugi
What! They dug and found a hot spring? That sounds like a drama!
Hop Bro
The hot spring water gushes up from 1,200 meters underground, from geological layers about 10,000 years old. Using that water directly as the brewing water is the biggest feature here. It has been a brewery since 1998.
Mugi
Water from 10,000 years ago... it must be rich in minerals.
Hop Bro
Exactly. Thanks to the minerals in the hot spring water, the beer has a smooth finish. They make just two kinds: Pilsner and Märzen. The Pilsner is crisp, refreshing, and easy to drink, while the Märzen is a rich, fruity style with strong malt sweetness.
Mugi
And the building was renovated from a former factory, right? The atmosphere must be incredible.
Hop Bro
They made use of the spacious former factory interior, with the restaurant arranged as if it were floating on the upper floor. There’s even an artificial pond inside. The operator, Nikutaanaka Co., also handles OEM brewing for Miyajima Beer, so their technical skill is solid.
Mugi
Wow, so they’re skilled enough to brew beer for other breweries too.
Hop Bro
Even better, if you use the restaurant you can also enjoy the hot spring for just 200 yen. In Bentencho, a downtown area, you can soak in a hot spring and drink beer made with 10,000-year-old water. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience you can only have here.

Beer after the hot spring! 200 yen!? I’m going this weekend!
