Craftman Umami in Nakazakicho is a large brewery restaurant with more than 120 seats, but what makes it interesting is that they brew on-site themselves.

120 seats!? I thought craft beer breweries were usually small. Is it really that big?

They have six 500-liter beer tanks lined up inside, and everything from brewing to fermentation, lagering, and serving is completed right here. New beers are being created one after another on about a three-week cycle.
Mugi
Oh, so it’s the kind of place where the tanks are right in front of you. What kind of beer can you drink there?

The signature is UPA, Umami Pale Ale. It has a beautiful amber color, with fruity hop aroma, the richness and sweetness of caramel malt, and a light bitterness in good balance. They always have around 20 kinds of craft beer, so you can compare different styles.
Mugi
UPA! So the 'U' is for UMAMI, not IPA! With 20 kinds, I’d have a hard time choosing.

The head brewer is Aaron, from the United States, and that’s part of the charm: you can drink American-style craft beer right in the middle of the Umeda area. There are counter seats, sofa seats, and even terrace seating, so you can use it for different occasions.

What about the food? Are there dishes that go well with beer?

Their stone-oven pizza is amazing too. They knead beer yeast into the dough and bake it all at once in a 480-degree stone oven. The idea of the brewer using beer yeast in the pizza dough is something you only get at a brewery restaurant. They also serve seriously good low-temperature-cooked steak and Italian dishes.
Mugi
Pizza with beer yeast! That has to go perfectly with beer! A drink after walking through Nakazakicho’s retro streets sounds amazing. I want to go!
