Koenji Beer Kobo is one of the pioneers of Tokyo's microbrewery boom. Founder Natsuoka Nomura opened it on Christmas Day in 2010.

It opened on Christmas! And in 2010, too? That was back when there were still hardly any brewpubs in Tokyo, right?
Hop Bro
Exactly. Nomura had originally worked at an advertising agency, but after being moved by the sight of a brewer making beer alone while traveling, he quit. He spent six months visiting Kibi Dote Shita Brewing in Okayama, where he learned everything from brewing techniques to shop setup and management.
Mugi
From ad man to beer craftsman... that's amazing determination.

What's more, the shop itself was renovated by Nomura and his wife from a former photo studio. With just three 150-liter brewing tanks, they make as many as 12 different beers.
Mugi
Twelve kinds! What do they have?
Hop Bro
There's a wide range: American Pale Ale, Red Ale, German Pilsner, Schwarz, IPA, White, Silk White, Blonde, Cream... The standard American Pale Ale is especially easy to drink and has no strong quirks, so it's perfect for craft beer beginners.
Mugi
It's great that it's friendly to beginners! Silk White and Cream especially sound interesting.

They've also expanded under the "Beer Kobo" brand, opening multiple locations and taking root in each neighborhood as a local beer shop. In Koenji, they're located in the Azuma-dori shopping street association, and the comfortable, everyday feel for local residents is part of the charm.

A brewery in a shopping street is the best! Craft beer as part of everyday life, like grabbing a drink on the way back from shopping. They have all-you-can-drink too, right? Let's go with friends!
Hop Bro
Yes, it's all-you-can-drink for all varieties starting at 2,680 yen for 60 minutes. It would be fun to aim for tasting all 12. They're open from noon on weekends, so it's the perfect finish to a stroll around Koenji.
