Honan Local Good Brewers is really a brewery you should know. The brewers there include people with disabilities, and their skills are the real deal. At the 2024 International Beer Cup, "Honan I.P.A." won silver and "Local Good Ale" won bronze.

What! They won at an international competition!? That's amazing!

It is. The representative, Takumi Banno, is from Tokushima and originally worked in corporate HR, handling recruitment of people with disabilities. From there he shifted into welfare work and launched the general incorporated association Beans in 2016, starting with a coffee roasting business.

Coffee to beer? Is there a connection?
Hop Bro
There really is. They apply the extraction techniques and flavor-building know-how they developed at a coffee operation called Social Good Roasters to beer brewing. On top of that, they split the tanks into eight so each step can be handled independently, making the setup one where each person can thoroughly learn the process they are responsible for.

The brewery itself was designed with the people who work there in mind...

To go back to the beer: "Honan I.P.A." has a full body with a clean bitterness, and "Honan Red Ale" brings out the toasty aroma of roasted malt. They also make a beer called "UNIVERSAL ALE" with 1% alcohol, which is based on the idea that even people who can't drink can enjoy it together.
Mugi
A 1% beer! Then I can go with friends who don't handle alcohol well too!

They also set up booths at festivals with the Honan Ginza Shopping Street, and their beers are now available at nearby supermarkets too. Their idea that "beer is a tool that brings people together" never wavers.

Being able to buy craft beer at the shopping street is the best. It's just a short walk from Honancho Station, right? I'm going to check it out next weekend!
