RACINES MICRO BREWERY is on the first floor of a facility called "Nonoaoyama" in Omotesando, and the area around it is filled with forest, so it feels nothing like the middle of a big city.
Mugi
What, a forest in Aoyama? And there’s a brewery there? I can’t even imagine it...
Hop Bro
RACINES was originally a popular restaurant, and in 2022 they launched a microbrewery alongside it. What’s interesting is that when they recruited brewing staff internally, it just so happened that all the applicants were women.
Mugi
Wow! A beer-making team made up of women is pretty rare. What kind of beer are they making?
Hop Bro
The first beer they made was a saison-style called "First Season." It has a refreshing, supple drinkability with citrus notes of orange and lemon plus a spicy finish. And it’s great that you can drink it for the regular price of 680 yen.
Mugi
680 yen! That’s a great deal in Aoyama. Do they have fruit beers too?
Hop Bro
Absolutely. They have "Hyuganatsu Beer," a hazy IPA made with hyuganatsu from farmers Nogoto-san and his wife in Aya Town, Miyazaki Prefecture. "Peach Beer," made with peaches from Watanabe Orchard in Kanuma City, Tochigi Prefecture, is a fruit ale. They also had a seasonal "Yuzu HAZY IPA" made with yellow yuzu from Nishimera Village, Miyazaki Prefecture.
Mugi
It’s wonderful that they even mention the place of origin and the farmers’ names... You can really see the people behind the ingredients.
Hop Bro
In fact, the brewery was inspired by a visit to Miyazaki Prefecture, where they saw how out-of-spec kumquats and hyuganatsu could be used. It all started from the idea of whether fruit that can’t be shipped because of its shape could be used in beer.
Mugi
So it also helps reduce food waste! Drinking fruit beer on a terrace in the middle of the forest sounds like the perfect day off, doesn’t it? I’m definitely going!
