Matsuyama, Ehime-based HOJO Brewing & Stays has released a new online-shop-exclusive product, Rye Saison (Rye Saison). The price is 4,200 yen (tax included) for a set of six bottles. The style is Saison, the ABV is 5.5%, and it is being introduced as a special version of the brewery's standard saison.

The key point this time is that rye has been blended into the regular saison. According to the brewery, it has a smoother mouthfeel than the standard version, with slightly stronger acidity and spiciness. In addition, the flavor is said to include a fruity sweetness derived from the rye itself, rather than from the yeast.

Saison is originally known as a style with a dry, brisk drinking impression and a spicy character from the yeast. By layering rye on top of that foundation, HOJO Brewing & Stays' "Rye Saison" keeps the familiar outline of the style while making the grain character more distinct. Compared with the regular saison, the changes brought by the rye should be even easier to notice.

Sales are limited to the online shop. A local brewery based in Matsuyama has introduced a limited version built on its standard lineup, making this a compelling release not only for saison fans but also for anyone who wants to check out the nuances of rye.
