Niigata Prefecture's Joetsu City-based Gangi Brewing has released 'HOMEY PILS' as its first Italian Pilsner. According to an Instagram post, the series is limited and the batch number is 1. It will be available in 15L kegs and 330ml bottles.

Features of HOMEY PILS

The style is Italian Pilsner. ABV is listed at 5.0%, IBU at 29, and EBC at 3.0. The malt bill uses Pilsen Malt, Lighthouse munich, and Spitz, while Saphir and Mittelfluh are used for the hops. With noble hops dry-hopped, this beer aims for a finish that is a little different from the so-called trendy dry-hopped lagers.

The post describes the aroma as "herbal, floral, berry," and says the flavor is light and clean, with a crisp finish. Rather than pushing aggressive bitterness or heavy richness to the forefront, the design is notable for delivering drinkability through a balance of crispness and aroma.

Brewery Background

Gangi Brewing is a brewery based in Joetsu City, Niigata. While carrying the name of its region, it also appears to actively pursue styles that do not stay too close to the mainstream. This release of 'HOMEY PILS' clearly reflects that approach. Built on the drinkability of a lager while adding character through hop-derived aroma, it is the kind of beer craft beer fans will want to pay attention to.

Italian Pilsner is a style that makes it easy to highlight hop aroma within a clean, easy-drinking profile. 'HOMEY PILS' also seems to make use of that strength, leaning toward a beer that can be enjoyed as an everyday pint. It will be interesting to see how this first attempt at the style from Gangi Brewing turns out in the glass.
