TRANSBREWING, based in Hiragishi, Toyohira Ward, Sapporo, has brought back its smoke-style happoshu, Smoke on the HAPPOSHU, for the first time in three years. The beer is now being poured at the brewery’s direct shop, TRANSBREWING BEER STAND, and is also being sold in bottles. The release was paired with a Brewers Day setup featuring special food designed to go with the beer.
The beer originally debuted about three years ago and won silver in the Smoke Beer category at the 2022 International Beer Cup. It sold well and quickly became hard to keep in stock, but production stopped when the peat malt at the heart of the recipe became unavailable after a factory fire. During the hiatus, TRANSBREWING kept the smoky concept alive with a sister beer, Smoke on the Wheat.
For the revival, the brewery switched from overseas peat malt to Hokkaido-sourced peat malt. With an IBU of 10 and ABV of 5%, the beer is designed to keep hop character restrained and let the peat aroma and malt flavor stand out. It is a measured return rather than a loud reinvention, and for fans of smoked beers, it marks a welcome comeback to the lineup.
