Kamiyama Beer Brewery, based in Kamiyama town in Tokushima, has announced a new summer seasonal beer, KAMIYAMA GRUIT-04. Founded in 2018 by Manus and Sayaka in the mountains of Shikoku, the brewery is known for small-batch beers that draw on local ingredients and a playful approach to traditional styles.

The new release is the fourth installment in the brewery’s gruit series. Gruit refers to beers brewed in medieval Europe before hops became widely used, when herbs and plants played the leading role. For KAMIYAMA GRUIT-04, the brewery paired fig leaves, which bring coconut- and vanilla-like notes, with raspberry leaves and cinnamon leaves. A small amount of hops was added as well.

The label also reflects the brewery’s hands-on style. Each bottle is hand-colored with botanical ink made from three different plants. The beer is listed at 6.0% ABV, 8 IBUs, and 3.5 SRM, suggesting a lightly bitter, aromatic profile.

Kamiyama Beer Brewery works with a small electric brewhouse and produces unfiltered, unpasteurized beers with natural carbonation. That focus on local character and careful brewing comes through again in this seasonal release. The brewery also notes that the beer is available through its online store, making it easy to pick up beyond the taproom in Kamiyama.
