Uchu Brewing was founded in Yamanashi in 2018 by two founders who first experienced the impact of craft beer in the United States. The brewery is now headquartered in Hokuto, Yamanashi, where it operates its brewery, and it also runs taprooms in Kobuchizawa and Toranomon, Tokyo.

“COSMIC WHALE,” announced on Instagram this time, is a collaboration beer with New York’s Finback Brewery. According to the product information, its style is DDH DIPA and its alcohol content is 8.5%. The hops used are Citra, Nelson Sauvin, Mosaic, Motueka, Nectaron, and Sabro, with flavor notes evoking mango, melon, tangerine, pineapple, and lime.

On the conceptual side, COSMIC WHALE is presented as a legendary space cryptid that approaches Earth as a being bringing love and harmony. The explanation that it expresses the beautiful song of the cosmic whale and a harmony of resonance reflects the sci-fi storytelling that Uchu Brewing does best, layered over a fruity, hazy drinking experience.

Beyond its flashy appearance and naming, this is a beer whose design intent is easy to see when you consider the collaboration partner Finback Brewery, the DDH DIPA style, and the combination of multiple tropical hops. It is a release that feels quintessentially Uchu Brewing, a brewery based in Hokuto, Yamanashi, that has been sharing beers with its own unique worldview.
