Flora Fermentation, a brewery in Higashiomi, Shiga, has released FLORALIA IPA, a fresh hop IPA built around the character of newly harvested hops.

The name FLORALIA comes from the ancient Roman festival honoring Flora, the goddess of flowers and abundance. Flora Fermentation uses the name for its fresh hop beer series, which showcases hops grown and harvested by the brewery.

This edition focuses on an IPA. The recipe combines brewery-grown fresh Cascade hops with Cascade from the United States and Hokkaido, Citra, and additional Cascade hop products. According to the brewery, the fresh hops bring a vivid, green and juicy aroma that gives the beer a bright seasonal character.

FLORALIA IPA is brewed with Pale Ale Malt, Northstar Pils, and White Wheat Malt. It has an alcohol content of 6.5% and 37 IBUs, placing it in a moderately bitter range while leaving room for the freshness of the hops to stand out. The beer is packaged in 350ml cans and carries batch number 107.

Flora Fermentation is based in Higashiomi and describes its work as creating beer through the combination of agriculture and fermentation. The brewery’s official blog documents its efforts in hop cultivation as well as the growing of barley and spelt wheat. That focus on agricultural ingredients is central to the appeal of its fresh hop beers.

FLORALIA IPA offers beer drinkers a chance to experience the aroma of hops close to harvest, with a profile that connects the brewery’s fields directly to the finished beer. It is best approached by taking time to enjoy the aroma first, then following how the fresh hop character develops as the beer warms.
