Craft Bank, a craft brewery based in Fukuchiyama, Kyoto, will host an Instagram Live from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14. Titled “How Does Coffee Change Craft Beer?”, the free event will bring together Craft Bank, coffee brand Shiritsu Coffee Shogakko, and Jiyu University.

The panel will feature Kensuke Shoda, co-founder and brewer of Craft Bank; Hisashi Yoshida, owner of Shiritsu Coffee Shogakko in Kinshicho, Tokyo; and essayist and Jiyu University president Jiro Fukai, who will moderate the discussion.

Craft Bank and Shiritsu Coffee Shogakko have previously collaborated on COFFEE STOUT, a coffee beer. During the livestream, the guests will revisit the development process and discuss how coffee selection, roasting, aroma, and compatibility with beer influence the final flavor.

The conversation will also look ahead to a new beer project. The participants are expected to exchange ideas about aroma, flavor, and the people they want to enjoy the beer, while exploring how ingredients such as coffee, fruit, and spices can complement traditional brewing materials.

Craft Bank opened its brewery in 2020 by converting a former bank building that had stood vacant for roughly 30 years. Based in Fukuchiyama, the brewery presents its philosophy with the phrase “Let’s do something with a beer in hand,” combining local revitalization with experimental brewing.

The new beer project is also connected to Jiyu University’s “Craft Beer Brewing” course, scheduled to begin in November. Students will take part in the process from developing the concept and selecting ingredients to brewing at Craft Bank’s facility and selling the finished beer. The livestream offers a look at how a beer moves from an initial idea to a collaborative product.
