Tokyo’s Jibiru Bar Marumugi in Arakicho, Shinjuku Ward, is introducing its craft beer lineup for April 11. The base pricing is 1,200 yen+α for the large size and 900 yen+α for the small size, with each beer priced at an additional 100 yen. True to form for a small beer bar, it is a setup that makes it easy to compare five beers with distinct personalities.
On tap today, first up is HEARTS UP! IPA / Repubrew. Its description reads, "Spring-colored, gently Hazy," and it seems set to be enjoyed as a soft, easy-drinking Hazy-style beer. Next is Fresh-Pressed Beyond the Pacific / Isekadoya Brewery, introduced as "Lupulin, in liquid form," a pour that puts NZ hop aromas front and center. It is a good choice for people looking for that fresh hop character.
Among the more distinctive beers, Mojiko Kobumikan Babaitzen / Mojiko Retro Beer stands out. It evokes the citrus character of kobumikan along with the softness typical of a Weizen. In addition, STRUGGLE IPA "Top" / Isekadoya Brewery is a revival IPA made with 10 hop varieties and described as aiming for the pinnacle of American IPA. You can expect firm bitterness and layered hop aroma. The final beer is Biscuit Hop / Minami Shinshu Beer. It is presented as a calm-toned beer that balances toastiness and drinkability.
Marumugi is a small beer bar that opened in 2011 and is located on the second floor of Ichibankan Building, 1 Arakicho, Shinjuku Ward. It is within walking distance of Yotsuya-sanchome Station on the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line, and its hours are 6:00 p.m. to midnight. For quietly focusing on what is in the glass, this kind of tap list is a strong match. Rather than flashiness, the lineup makes the differences in brewing and hop usage easy to see, making it the kind of selection craft beer fans will not want to miss.
